The new short for 2009, PIXIE CUTS

by BeautyVice on February 5, 2009

We have seen the short bobs gain back their popularity among Hollywood’s elite. From the posh Victoria Beckham to fashion mogul Rihanna to the conservative Katie Holmes, the short trend has expanded beyond the pages of the fashion magazines we pick up while waiting in the line at our local grocery store, to the local salons where they are imitated. If you think that short do’s had their moment, think again, the look for 2009 demands more boldness…the pixie cut. Before you think there are limitations while attaining this cut, I ask you to hold that thought while I demonstrate different ways and techniques for achieving a versatile, easy, edgy way to rock this cut.

Once you decide that short is where you want to go, you might as well go all out and consider the options of a pixie cut. For women with tight or spiral curls, don’t feel limited, this look is just as much for you as it is for the straight haired. Reference Keri Russell when she cut off her spiral locks a few years back. The tight curled pixie cut amplified her face leaving an edgy yet sophisticated look. To keep curls from frizzing and separating, I suggest using the Bumble and Bumble Sumowax, it provides a very strong hold and has become very popular with men. The Sumowax is perfect for holding your curls intact, men love it for that very reason, durability. Curly hair demands a product that can maintain control without the cardboard feel and the Sumowax offers just that. Remember, everything in moderation, I tend to reiterate over and over because everyone has different hair. Within the category of curly hair there are thick curly hair and fine curly hair. The best way to apply, a small bit at a time as the Sumowax has the potential to be very stiff when too much is applied.

For the straight pixie, there are many different ways to sport the cut. For a more conservative, sleek yet edgy look, I recommend using a small flat iron. A good way to keep this conservative approach with an edge is to part on the side and push your hair in one direction, this gives some depth to your hair, leaving your strands all in one rhythm is boring. If this doesn’t work for you there is something else you can consider, long bangs. A short pixie cut with long bangs blow dried or ironed to the side brings back the 1997 side bang look that we all so very much loved with the edgy flair of the chopped pixie.

There are different ways to rock the straight short pixie. One is the messy look. Depending on the texture of your hair, you can leave to air dry right out the shower with some serum to keep the fly aways from happening or style as the preceding but shaking it up a bit with your fingers tousling your strands. If you have relatively straight hair that has a little wave to it, you might be able to get away with just lightly towel drying your hair and applying serum, I recommend our Bumble and Bumble Defrizz or any of our Kenra shining products to hold the frizz while keeping the natural vibrancy in your hair. The untamed look is in, short untamed and big sunglasses partnered together brings to focus on your face and hair negating whatever lies below the neck at first glance. As women, this is what we love, attention to our faces.

From personal experience what I have come to find is that Bumble and Bumble is a line that offers a little bit of something for every type of hair. Especially for bold cuts of short curly hair, the demand for hold and durable style raises skepticism for women that want the look but timid of actually doing it. Knowing what products to use is imperative for achieving this goal.
