Quick and easy tussled locks!

by BeautyVice on January 29, 2009

With the recent boom in organic and natural products taking over, it was only a matter of time before this trend hit the beauty market, the new look for 2009 as shown in the most recent 2009 BCBG Spring collection featured on Elle.com, tussled curls, messy bobs and simple symmetrical parts. For long hair, tussled locks are in! With natural being in and the current state of the economy, it has become more convenient for women to achieve the new look with proper time management and the reliefs of saving one’s hair from the chemical upkeeps that have dominated hair trends in the past with an ease on the pocket.

How to get this look

The beauty with this look is that it is good for both medium to long hair. If you have straight/slightly wavy hair, for tussled locks, towel dry hair by scrunching with a towel lightly but not too much, you want to keep a certain amount of dampness in your hair to keep the waves, apply a heavy conditioner like our Bumble and Bumble styling crème or curl conscious conditioner. Depending how confident you are with your waves, apply the minimum a quarter size dab in your palm. Crunch into hair, grab and squeeze the front and back locks over and over until you feel a consistency throughout your hair. Flip hair back and scrunch some more. You do not want to apply too much as the hair may stiffen, to keep fly away and frizz from sticking out, we recommend the Kenra silkening spray or the Joico leave in conditioner to keep shine and durability for the waves. Remember, everything in moderation, a good balance between the conditioner and shine or leave in sprays will leave your hair with the controlled natural look. I have found this to work for myself, I have wavy to straight hair, by using this procedure I have had endless compliments of my hair, commonly noted for that Carrie Bradshaw look when she was in Paris of the 6th season of Sex and the City. To spruce up curls, use a curling iron for the front locks to give more definition to the locks.

For the ladies with straight hair that want some body and fullness, I recommend you perform the same procedure but instead of towel dry, apply the same products mentioned in the preceding but hand dry and squeeze out the dampness in your hair after the shower. Using a towel will dry quicker leaving less time for your hair to absorb the conditioner or crème which are the key ingredients for keeping this look. The procedure works for most hair types, straighter thinner hair takes more attention but it is very important that you continue scrunching. I personally like to let my hair dry naturally, let it sit wet for about 45 min before it start to dry up. Some prefer the blow dryer to diffuse which works as well but leaves more fly aways, you will find your own preference.

The straight flat iron look that rocked the pages of fashion magazines the past 3 years  is now taking a step back, the straight look for 2009 is easy to attain and cheap. A simple part of symmetry to the hair, the ends slightly curled to bring more emphasis to the face and body as the simple look is in for the New Year. A popular look has been straight by the roots with curled ends. To get the big tussled ends of Blake Lively and Vanessa Hudgens, take a 3″ curler or brush and blow dry or curl outwards, away from the face. Lightly spray hair with a spray like our Redken Satinwear 02 Blow-Dry Lotion. A good tip to remember from personal experience, hair tends to weigh out thus why we use products such as mousse and hairspray to keep the style we adjust it to. Without overdoing it and preventing the feel of stiffness, leave hair the way it is after styling. If curls look a little too much, let them sit for an hour and they will eventually weigh out. This keeps the shape while still achieving that controlled look.

Every woman knows her hair. Every woman can appreciate a good style that is both easy and affordable to maintain, these looks are for the single, the married and the moms. Easy on the pockets saving you the trouble of maintaining your split ends. Straight hair always draws more attention to fine details such as dry and split ends while curly natural looks help compensate for the time most women don’t have to upkeep their ends every 2-3 months for a routine trim. Simplicity and practicality are the dominating trend for 2009.
