The difference between flaking and dandruff.

Flaking of the scalp is either produced by dandruff or a dry scalp. Dandruff is distinctly different from flaking in that dandruff has a greasy flake which is larger in size than flakes caused by a dry scalp. Flakes from a dry scalp have a powdery structure and are caused by the accumulation of dry skin on the scalp. When this dry skin sheds the scalp, the loose flakes are dislodged and fall on your shoulders. The flaking from Dandruff on the other hand, is accompanied by redness of the scalp and an itchy scalp. Flaking from dryness of the scalp is a less common condition that can be easily managed by adding a moisturizing conditioner to your hair care routine. Dandruff is not limited to the scalp, it can be found on the eyebrows and the chest. Dandruff needs to be addressed with an anti dandruff shampoo or a stronger shampoo prescribed by your dermatologist.

Some people that suffer from oily hair, seem to have the constant problem of not being able to cleanse  their scalp sufficiently to mitigate the oil production from their scalp. The natural by product of this is for someone to try to over shampoo. Over shampooing creates a dryer scalp which in turn forces one to condition the scalp creating the same condition one had from the beginning. The key to treating an overly oily scalp, is to use a shampoo with salicylic acid. Salicylic acid will address the sebaceous glands in the scalp that produce the oil to begin with.
